Rock Lake Provincial Park Camping

As we approached the turn off to the gravel road we saw A moose and two calf’s on the side of the road.

Friends booked a couple campsites at Rock Lake Provincial Park for our second Alberta camping trip.  The first wildlife we saw was a Moose and two calf’s on the side of the road, just as we were about to turn off onto the gravel road.

The road in was good.  We had been warned that the road had been washed out earlier in the season, and although repaired a car was not recommended.  The washed out sections we short and slow, but any stock car should have no trouble getting it (and the road should be fully repaired eventually as well).

E behind our campsite checking out the creek.

I was surprised by the campsite, large spots, picnic tables where in great shape, the bathrooms were new and clean, firewood was supplied and a new playground was perfect for the boys.  This is a lot nicer than I have ever seen for the price.

A park is always a hit.

Highlight of any park is the swings.

The lake was beautiful, great trails that started by our campsite and went further than we had time to walk.  We had no animals in our campsite, but saw lots of wildlife around.  Moose, deer, squirrels and bears.  The park shares a boundary with Jasper and another with Wilmore Wilderness Park.  We took a drive a dusk and saw lots of wildlife, the most exciting was a bear about 15 feet from the car.  It was too dark to get a picture, but great to see.  The boys had fun looking for wildlife as well, as we saw new animals often enough to keep them engaged.

The nights were cooler than we are prepared for, next year we will need to either finish the trailer or buy warmer sleeping gear.

Deer taking note of us as we drove around.

The boys at the first boat launch at Rock Lake.

A lookout, with a great view of the lake and the valley past the lake as seen in this picture.

Going for a short hike.

A Bear and cub across the valley. (the black dots in the middle of the picture)

A picture of the Bear and cub, taken through binoculars (not enough zoom)

Bear watching.

Bridges are always exciting, this one a little more so than usual.

  1. looks like a great place. Its nice to know that there still are places to go that have a lot of wildlife :)

  2. Beautiful place to camp! Wish I could have been there to see the bear and her cub.

    • It was great! Since having the boys I haven’t seen any bears (I think they are loud enough they keep them all away) until this trip. This was perfect, as they were far enough away the boys were safe to run around, and we could take the time to watch. It was also great to see my oldest take such an interest in watching them, and have it hold his interest.

We also saw a bear while we were driving around the lake, just off the road walking. It was too dark to get a picture (I am not sure how they respond to flashes, didn’t want to try). Great trip for seeing animals.

  3. What an amazing place. I’d like to go there in high summer when all the wildflowers (and possibly native orchids) are blooming.

    • We were there for the mushrooms, never seen so many and so many different kinds. Orchids would have been beautiful, didn’t see any though. With so many fields, the color would be amazing.

  4. Such a beautiful place! Your photos are stunning, thank you for sharing such a great post!
