Maligne Lake Jasper

Maligne Lake, Jasper

After driving everyone was excited to get out of the car and stretch.  Having never been to Maligne Lake before, we headed towards the docks and buildings to look around.

The lake is amazing; at around 1700 m. it has the beauty of a mountain lake and it is huge.  We checked out the canoe rental, however they only had small canoes, allowing for only three of us.  We will need to return with our canoe so we can explore the water.

The trail along the lake was full of great views, forest and animals (more on that later).  The boys had fun walking, playing on the beach and taking pictures.

Near the end of our walk, the need to get C to the bathroom, so I ran ahead with him, and my wife and E continued at his pace.   Only a couple minutes after separating, C and I came across a deer (snapping the deer picture below), then with an excited yell form my son the deer took off running.

What I can only assume was a minute later my wife and other son came up on the deer.  The deer looked up from where it was standing, and started to charge.  My wife grabbing E, pulled him in and shielded him from the animal as it brushed past.

This would be the closest incident we have ever had with an animal, and with others watching in an area full of people.  I would have expected such a run in with wild life to have occurred in a more remote location, or a least with a more aggressive animal.

The boys at Maligne Lake.

C taking a turn behind the camera. Pretty good for one of his first pictures.

They love beaches.

The offending Deer, before.

  1. I am thankful that your wife and son were not hurt.. deer can be very nasty.. I’m also happy that you got to see Maligne Lake on such a beautiful sunny day, it looks a lot different in clouds.. thanks for posting the photos.

    • The deer gave us a scare, but close calls are good, they keep you prepared and cautious.

I am glad you liked the pictures. The Rockies are an amazing place, hoping to get some great winter pictures there this year, be fun to experience winter.

  2. Love the beautiful mountains. You are so lucky to be able to enjoy the great out of doors so often with your family. Keep it up!

  5. Great shots! The deer experience gives me a new respect for them. I always intend on keeping a distance from any wildlife. But deer aren’t the ones I thought would be more agressive. Thanks for visiting my blog!

    • Thank you, it is a beautiful place. I have always keep my distance from all animals in the wild, the part that made me nervous was I had the bear spray with me, but being separated for only a minute I am now planning on making sure we are both prepared.

  6. Nice post! Love your nature photos.

  7. What a beautiful lake! Such a neat area to take your boys (other than the deer incident!).
